Salt Spring’s Christmas Bird Count

Nature Salt Spring is coordinating the Island’s Christmas Bird Count on Sunday, December 17. Event coordinators are Peter McAllister, Kathleen Maser and Tim Marchant. On this day observers use Audubon Christmas Bird Count protocols to observe and count birds in a defined area of Salt Spring. Most observers usually spend an hour or two that day, although some spend several hours. There are also protocols for observing at your bird feeder, if you’d like to do that.

The Island is divided into 12 Counting Zones, with each Zone’s count being coordinated by a Zone Leader. We’re hoping to expand the number of counters in this year’s Count. Please contact the Zone leader in your area of residence or for the Zone where you’d like to count. You don’t have to be an expert birder to participate, but if you have not already participated in a CBC Count, or are new to the Island, we ask that you plan to partner with (a) birder(s) with previous experience in our count. Contact Kathleen Maser to sign up to participate: Kathleen Maser  --  khmaser@shaw.ca
