Salt Spring's Annual Christmas Bird Count

Salt Spring's Annual Christmas Bird Count - Sunday, December 14

Preparations are underway for the annual Christmas Bird Count (CBC), North America's longest-running Citizen Science project. The data – number of  birds we count and  number of species – is of increasing importance to understanding population trends across the Western Hemisphere in the face of climate change.

Very soon, the captains of Salt Spring Island's 11 Zones will be in contact with former counters. If you are not already a part of the CBC, this is a super opportunity for new birders, even beginners, to accompany some of our experienced birders and enjoy an amazing hour or 2 (or even a full day in nature if you like) on December 14.

We bet you didn't know that counting birds can even be done from the comfort of your own home!

Or, perhaps you would just like to learn more about the Count before signing up.  Then why not join us for an afternoon/evening of information/appetizers/mocktails and good fun at the Christmas Bird Count (CBC) Social, Dec. 10th, 4:30-6:30 at the Lions Hall. You'll meet Count organizers, Kathleen Maser and Tim Marchant, and possibly meet the Zone Captain for your neighbourhood/region or other bird enthusiasts from around the Island.

Please pass this information along to any of your friends and neighbours who are interested in birds and nature and might enjoy this experience.
