Biodiversity Days Nature Extravaganza

In 2023 Nature Salt Spring brought Dr. Elaine Humphrey and she brought the University of Victoria Mechanical Engineering’s Scanning Electron Microscopeto the Island for a wonderful look at the small organisms and micro-worlds of Salt Spring. The program at Blackburn Lake was a huge success, involving field trips, collections, and up close and personal viewing (as a group) of living things that only a few biologists ever get to see. We even had a number of young folks controlling the Microscope while the rest of us looked on in amazement. (Can you imagine what it wold look like to fill a huge projecting screen with views of stinging nettle spikes?)

The Great News is that, in partnership with the Salt Spring Island Conservancy, we will be bringing Elaine and her traveling Scanning Electron Microscope back to the Blackburn Lake facility for an extended look at the natural history of Salt Spring - especially the tiny and microscopic things that are spectacular but  remain mostly unseen.

With this program we will be celebrating Biodiversity Days (May 22), and we’ll have programming around that. The Program is under construction. If you’d like to volunteer to help with the event and if you plan to attend or could be involved with a presentation let us know at this link. We’d love to have help organizing this and to have you share our knowledge with NSS and SSIC members if possible!
