Split Personalities - The Crazy Lives of Salish Sea Marine Animals

Illustrated Presentation

Split Personalities - The Crazy Lives of Salish Sea Marine Animals
Presented by Marine Naturalist, David Denning

Friday, April 10 - 7:00 PM

Salt Spring Public Library

When the tide is out it’s always rewarding to walk along a rocky shoreline. You might discover a group of brightly-coloured sea stars in a wet crevice or an even more spectacular nudibranch cruising along in a tidepool.

This presentation will explore the amazing lives of a few of our local marine animals, – looking not so much at their adult lives along the shore, but rather, the early period in their lives when they develop from eggs and sperm until they are ready to settle.

It turns out that almost all Salish seashore animals spend a significant portion of their lives drifting about in the ocean at the whims of tidal currents. They ‘grow up’ in the plankton.  Using colourful photographs and images taken with the microscope, we’ll piece together a revealing picture of the crazy diversity of sex and survival that feeds the ocean ecosystems, and we’ll explore how this complex system is threatened by climate change.
