Birding is attracting a wealth of new interest among nature-enthusiasts of all ages. Especially younger people are discovering the joys of listening to birds using apps such as Merlin, or photographing birds with more powerful iPhones, sharing bird information and discoveries on social media, and even contributing to citizen science through apps like iNaturalist and eBird. New birding is becoming a popular hobby!
In this presentation, inspiring speaker and bird expert, Liam Ragan, will introduce the joys and benefits of modern birding practices through stories of bird natural history and photographs of some of the birds we all might find in this bird-rich part of our province. This presentation will appeal to anyone interested in nature and birds, from wannabes or novices to advanced, from younger to older.
Liam will recount some of his own experiences including his epic year of identifying and documenting a record number of bird species on Vancouver Island in 2024. He will provide insights into the many benefits of watching birds on whatever level you might choose. Liam’s enthusiasm and depth of knowledge is contagious, and you’ll probably find yourself lining up to join Liam’s guided field session on Friday morning, October 16.

Liam Ragan is a young naturalist who loves nature’s biodiversity – especially birds. He is the Provincial Coordinator for Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas in British Columbia and he specializes in First Nations engagement, fundraising, and volunteer coordination. He also serves on the Board of Rocky Point Bird Observatory which conducts scientific studies of, monitoring of, and education about migratory birds in North America. He holds a BA from McGill (Anthropology and Environmental Studies) and is currently pursuing a M.Sc.
Liam is an enthusiastic presenter and field birding guide and has inspired audiences and field groups throughout BC with his deep knowledge, amazing stories and photography. In 2024 he undertook a year of intense birding in which he established a new record of 286 different bird species, documented on Vancouver Island in a single year.
